They are ultimately responsible for a film's artistic and commercial success or failure.
They make crucial decisions such as selecting the right cast, crew and locations for the film.
They direct the rehearsals and the performances of the actors once the film is in production.
They may also manage the technical aspects such as the camera, sound, lighting, design and special effects but usually they hire a professional to take care of these.
The director of an advert would liaise with the whole team, especially those involved directly with the scenes that they are filming, this could be personnel from the camera and lighting teams to the actors themselves. This is so they can interact and decide what is best for the shots they are shooting. They could also meet with the creative directors and script writers as they are the ones who know what is supposed to happen within the scene.
The attributes they may need to enable them to work effectively with clients, cinematographers and actors include willingness to exceed targets, the ability to adjust and adapt, creativity and innovation. These attributes are near vital as a director has to know how to manage the team below them. They have to be able to take constructive criticism especially from the script writer and creative director as they are the people who know how to scene is supposed to be played out. Directors also have to be able to communicate effectively otherwise the rest of the team won't know what they are expected to do to make sure the process runs as smooth as possible.
